In our previous studies in the first four of the five books within the Book of Psalms, we’ve seen that each brought forth a vital factor that God wanted us to incorporate within our worship of Him.
The first concerned itself with the vital importance of obeying God and embracing the fruits thereof. The second focuses upon depth of Jehovah’s ways of caring for us. The third is about how to stand in the presence of His holiness and how to do our best to do likewise. And finally, the fourth teaches us how to embrace the depth of God’s love when He renders His Godly ‘corrections’ to place us back upon our heavenly path.
Book five: (Psalms 107 -150)
This fifth and final book of the five books within the Book of Psalms, concerns itself with how to worship our God with great thanksgiving and reverence for the power of His redemptive deliverance.
Ps. 107 sets the entire tone for the fifth book:
O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His compassion and lovingkindness endure forever! Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary, and gathered them from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.
They wandered in the wilderness in a [solitary] desert region; and did not find a way to an inhabited city. Hungry and thirsty, they fainted. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He rescued them from their distresses. He led them by the straight way, to an inhabited city [where they could establish their homes].
Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness, and for His wonderful acts to the children of men! For He satisfies the parched throats and fills the hungry appetite with what is good.
Some dwelt in darkness and in the deep (deathly) darkness, prisoners [bound] in misery and chains, because they had rebelled against the precepts of God and spurned the counsel of the Most High. Therefore He humbled their heart with hard labor; they stumbled and there was no one to help. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He saved them from their distresses.
He brought them out of darkness and the deep (deathly) darkness and broke their bonds apart. Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness, and for His wonderful acts to the children of men! Ps. 107:1 – 15. AMP
Fools, because of their rebellious way, and because of their sins, were afflicted…and they drew near to the gates of death. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He saved them from their distresses. He sent His word and healed them, and rescued them from their destruction.
Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness, and for His wonderful acts to the children of men! And let them offer the sacrifices of thanksgiving and speak of His deeds with shouts of joy! Ps. 107:12:22 AMP
While this account reflects Israel’s downfall due to their unrepentant sinful, leading to their Babylonian exile, and God’s deliverance out of His compassion and lovingkindness; those same promises applied to Jehovah’s adopted Gentile children and their historical falling away because He included them in the Abrahamic Covenant.
I will praise you, Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations. For your faithful love is higher than the heavens, and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
God, be exalted above the heavens, and let your glory be over the whole earth. Ps. 108:3 – 5. AMP
Still focusing on Jehovah’s love and faithfulness and how it glorifies Him.
The Lord (Father) says to my Lord (the Messiah, His Son), “Sit at My right hand
Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet [subjugating them into complete submission].”
The Lord will send the scepter of Your strength from Zion, saying, “Rule in the midst of Your enemies.” Your people will offer themselves willingly [to participate in Your battle] in the day of Your power; In the splendor of holiness, from the womb of the dawn, your young men are to You as the dew.
The Lord has sworn [an oath] and will not change His mind: “You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.” The Lord is at Your right hand, He will crush kings in the day of His wrath. He will execute judgment [in overwhelming punishment] among the nations; He will fill them with corpses, He will crush the chief men over a broad country.
He will drink from the brook by the wayside; Therefore He will lift up His head [triumphantly]. Ps. 110 AMP
Since the time of Moses, God has been talking about a Messiah, a future King with an eternal reign alongside Him, even within the Abrahamic Covenant. Here, He cements this Messiah in His place, as His own Son.
He has made His wonderful acts to be remembered; The Lord is gracious and merciful and full of loving compassion.
He has given food to those who fear Him [with awe-inspired reverence];
He will remember His covenant forever.
He has sent redemption to His people; He has ordained His covenant forever;
Holy and awesome is His name—[inspiring reverence and godly fear].
The [reverent] fear of the Lord is the beginning (the prerequisite, the absolute essential, the alphabet) of wisdom; a good understanding and a teachable heart are possessed by all those who do the will of the Lord;
His praise endures forever. Ps. 111:4, 5, 9, 10. AMP
Once again, we see that God gracefully delivers His children because of His faithfulness to His covenant with them.
And those with the greatest access are those who purposely seek God’s word, do their best to learn it’s meaning, and strive to be in obedience to it.
The righteous one will be remembered forever. He will not fear bad news; his heart is confident, trusting in the Lord. His heart is assured; he will not fear. Ps. 112:6 – 8. CSB
Obedience, infinite presence in heaven…
All you who fear the Lord, trust the Lord! He is your helper and your shield.
The Lord remembers us and will bless us. Ps.115: 11, 12. NLT
Reverent trust, protection and blessing.
I love the Lord because he has heard my appeal for mercy. Because he has turned his ear to me, I will call out to him as long as I live.
The ropes of death were wrapped around me, and the torments of Sheol overcame me; I encountered trouble and sorrow. Then I called on the name of the Lord: “Lord, save me!”
The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is compassionate. The Lord guards the inexperienced; I was helpless, and he saved me. “Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you. For you, Lord, rescued me from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling.
I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living. Ps. 116:1 – 9. CSB
Those who walk with God at their personal best, can rest assured that God will deliver them. But what happens if leaving this earth now is His timely redemption?
Precious [and of great consequence] in the sight of the Lord is the death of His godly ones [so He watches over them]. Ps. 116:15. AMP
Why? Because He knows that at the instant of His child’s death, his or her spirit will rise to be with Him forever before the bodily resurrection. [1]
In my distress I prayed to the Lord, and the Lord answered me and set me free. The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me? Ps. 118:5, 6. NLT
So, time and time we learn that it is God that delivers His children from all circumstances. That includes mere humans. And all of that is based upon our best efforts to walk in His word:
Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the Lord. Joyful are those who obey his laws and search for him with all their hearts. They do not compromise with evil, and they walk only in his paths. Ps. 119:1 – 3. NLT
Your promise revives me; it comforts me in all my troubles. Ps. 119:50, 51. NLT
My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees. Your instructions are more valuable to me than millions in gold and silver. Ps. 119:71, 72. NLT
If Your law had not been my delight, then I would have perished in my time of trouble.
I will never forget Your precepts, for by them You have revived me and given me life. Ps. 119: 91, 92. AMP
Those who trust in and rely on the Lord [with confident expectation] are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved but remains forever. Ps. 125:1 AMP
They who sow in tears shall reap with joyful singing. Ps. 126:5 AMP
And lastly, let us consider the blessings that Jehovah has rendered, (and still does), and how lovingly and mercifully our relationship can be with our Creator:
Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the Lord protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good. It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones. Ps. 127:1, 2. NLT
Lord, if you kept a record of our sins, who, O Lord, could ever survive? But you offer forgiveness that we might learn to fear you… for with the Lord there is unfailing love.
His redemption overflows. Ps. 130:3, 4 & 7. NLT
Your name, O Lord, endures forever, Your fame and remembrance, O Lord, [endures] throughout all generations. For the Lord will judge His people and He will have compassion on His servants [revealing His mercy]. Ps. 135:13, 14. AMP
Yes, they will sing of the ways of the Lord [joyfully celebrating His wonderful acts], for great is the glory and majesty of the Lord. Though the Lord is exalted, He regards the lowly [and invites them into His fellowship]… Ps.138:5, 6. AMP
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me; You will stretch out Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and Your right hand will save me.
The Lord will accomplish that which concerns me; Your [unwavering] lovingkindness, O Lord, endures forever— Ps. 138:7, 8.
O Lord, you have searched me [thoroughly] and have known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up [my entire life, everything I do]; You understand my thought from afar. You scrutinize my path and my lying down and You are intimately acquainted with all my ways.
Even before there is a word on my tongue [still unspoken],
Behold, O Lord, You know it all.
You have enclosed me behind and before, and [You have] placed Your hand upon me. Ps.139: 1-5. AMP
I will give thanks and praise to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was being formed in secret, and intricately and skillfully formed [as if embroidered with many colors] in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Your book were all written the days that were appointed for me, when as yet there was not one of them [even taking shape]. Ps. 139:14 -16. AMP
I will exalt you, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever. I will praise you every day; yes, I will praise you forever.
Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure his greatness. Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power.
I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles. Ps. 145:1 -5. NLT
The Lord is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation. Ps.145:8, 9. NLT
The Lord helps the fallen and lifts those bent beneath their loads.
The eyes of all look to you in hope; you give them their food as they need it.
When you open your hand, you satisfy the hunger and thirst of every living thing.
The Lord is righteous in everything he does; he is filled with kindness. The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth. He grants the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cries for help and rescues them. The Lord protects all those who love him… Ps.145:14 -20. NLT
He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds. He counts the stars and calls them all by name. How great is our Lord! His power is absolute! His understanding is beyond comprehension! Ps. 147:3 -5. NLT
Sing to the Lord a new song. Sing his praises in the assembly of the faithful…Praise his name with dancing, accompanied by tambourine and harp. For the Lord delights in his people; he crowns the humble with victory. Let the faithful rejoice that he honors them. Ps. 149:1 & 3 – 5. NLT
Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord! Ps. 150:6. NLT
Well, we have learned how mighty and faithful and loving a God that we have, and we have been exceeding blessed with how to be with Him up close and personal. There is nothing else more worthy than our relationship with Him.
Goodnight and God bless.
