That is one of the big bonuses you receive when God cherishes you. We should then ask, ‘What is a blessing? English dictionaries define it as ‘a special favor given from God,’ ‘something promoting or contributing to happiness, well-being, or prosperity,’ or, ‘to favor with talent.’
We can go all the way back to the dawn of humankind to see the first blessing:
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Gn. 1:28 ESV
In other words, we are born blessed with the entire world at our fingertips.
Going forward to the time of Abraham, we see that it was his faith in God that brought his blessings:
“In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” Gn. 22:18 NKJV
Thus, Abraham was blessed and he himself became a blessing to all the peoples of the world. That same blessing is facilitated and perpetuated through Christ, to all the children of God:
Christ purchased our freedom and redeemed us from the curse of the Law and its condemnation by becoming a curse for us – for it is written, “CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS [crucified] ON A TREE (cross)” – in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might also come to the Gentiles, so that we would all receive [the realization of] the promise of the [Holy] Spirit. Gal. 3:13, 14. AMP
We are even blessed when we are persecuted for our faith:
If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because of the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 1 Pt. 4:14 NASB
And if we have faith, then we are going to do the best that we can to walk according to God’s word, which again, brings blessings:
“See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God…” Dt. 11:26, 27. ESV
God wants you to prosper (be blessed) in every aspect of your life, and He doesn’t hold back. It is one of the ways that He showers you with His love – both on you and through you, because your blessings reflect God’s goodness, which attracts others to His love:
The blessing of the LORD makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow with it. Pr. 10:22 NKJV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places is Christ… Eph. 1:3 NASB
Note that the scripture says, ‘has blessed;’ God has already given them to His children. How can we show our gratitude? By blessing Him back:
“When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the LORD your God… Dt. 8:10
Sing to the LORD, bless His name; proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day. Ps. 96:2 NKJV
Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name. Ps. 100:4 NKJV
When you are blessed, God calls you to share them – even with those whom you think may not deserve them:
“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.” Lk. 6:27, 28. ESV
That’s Love’s way of doing things. After all, aren’t we at our best when we are walking in love and looking out for the welfare of others? Moreover, God even piles more blessings upon you when you bless others:
How blessed is he who considers the helpless. Ps. 41:1 NASB
“Blessed are the gentle…the merciful…the peacemakers…” Mt. 5:5, 7 & 9. NASB
Wait! God is still not done blessing you. We all know that we fall short many times in our walk with Jehovah. In spite of those missteps, if we approach Him with sincere confession and repentance, He forgives our sin and honors our efforts with blessings:
How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered! Ps. 32:1 NASB
Even if God had to lovingly chastise you to change directions, He still tucks a blessing in the process:
Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O LORD, and whom you teach out of your law, to give him rest from the days of trouble… Ps. 94:12, 13. ESV
Looking at the big picture then, we see that Jehovah loved us and blessed us even before we were a thought in our parents’ minds. God continues to do so throughout our lifetimes. He blesses in such great measure, that we can easily afford to share them with everyone and with the Source of them as well. That’s a lot of love! And, it’s just the opening act!
All of God’s blessings are about laying the foundation for all your love-filled moments throughout eternity…
Goodnight and God bless.
